Season's Greetings and Happy New Year from the UK ALMA Regional Centre

With ALMA Cycle 6 observations well underway and scheduled to continue over the winter break and into the new year, we at the UK ARC Node would like to take this opportunity to wish all UK ALMA users, past, present and future a pleasant Christmas and a Happy 2019!

ALMA2019: science results and cross-facility synergies

14-18 October 2019

Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy

This is the first announcement of the "ALMA2019: ALMA2019: science results and cross-facility synergies" meeting. Following the success of previous meetings held in 2012 in Puerto Varas, Chile; in 2014 in Tokyo, Japan; and in 2016 in Indian Wells, California, USA, this meeting aims to once again bring together the world-wide ALMA community to discuss the observatory's recent scientific highlights. A first announcement with further information will be distributed in early 2019.

Recent UK ARC Node Activity: Durham Workshop

Last month saw the UK ARC Node run a successful ALMA data reduction workshop for astronomers at the University of Durham. Over the course of three days, the workshop covered the fundamentals of interferometric observation, data reduction, and advanced calibration and imaging techniques with specific focus of use of ALMA data. The resources used for the meeting can be found at the meeting webpage.

If you would like an ALMA data reduction workshop at your institute, please contact us.

STFC Long Term Attachments & ESO studentship and fellowship programmes

For students with PhD projects related to ALMA, the following funding opportunities are available for students to facilitate long term visits to other institutes, facilities, or observatories.

STFC Long Term Attachments

STFC LTAs allocate funding to PhD students to spend between 120 and 548 days at an institute overseas. More info is avaiulable from this webpage. This cycle's deadline is 31 March 2019.

ESO studentship

ESO offers several studentships to PhD students each year allowing them to travel and work at ESO facilities for between 1 and 2 years, completing their PhD project under the supervision of their home institute with co-supervision from and ESO staff astronomer. Projects in this initiative currently include several ALMA related topics. More information is available from this information page on the ESO website. Additionally, see the thesis topics list. The two annual application deadlines are 31st May and 15th November.

ESO fellowship

For new post-doctoral researches there is the ESO fellowship programme, which combines research positions with observing/facility specific responsibilities at an ESO location (either Garching, Germany, or Santiago, Chile). These last for 3 (Garching) or 4 (Santiago) years, with Santiago positions including astronomer on duty rolls at ESO telescopes. More information can be found on the programme overview page.  The annual application deadline is 15th October.
