New UK ARC Node Website

During the summer the UK ARC Node has revamped and moved our website to a new system. We are pleased to announce that the new site is now live and can be found at our normal address, which is www.alma.ac.uk.

The website includes information on:

  • User support provided by the UK ARC Node.
  • Lists of upcoming meetings.
  • An archive of recent ALMA related publications and press releases.
  • Links to all useful ALMA related webpages.
  • … And of course our contact information!

ALMA Community Day: Cardiff

Second Announcement

The UK ALMA Regional Centre Node in collaboration with the School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University are pleased to announce an ALMA Community Day on the 13th October 2014. This workshop is aimed at both novice and advance users and is open to all people from within the UK as well as other users from abroad.

The workshop will cover the current status of ALMA and include contributed ALMA science talks. The UK ARC will also provide tutorials on all aspects of working with ALMA, from proposal preparation and data simulation to advanced imaging techniques of observed data using CASA. These will include new tutorials covering the latest developments in the CASA software and use ALMA archival data.

New Science Verification Data

These data are of:

  • Water masers in VY CMa at Bands 7 and 9 demonstrating the 1-3km baseline capability.
  • The HCN line observed from Comet Lemmon at Band 6 demonstrating Doppler tracking of ephemeris targets.

ALMA Demonstrates Band 10 Capability

ALMA has taken its first images at Band 10 (787-950GHz). The image of Uranus was released earlier this month and can be found here: http://almaobservatory.org/en/press-room/announcements-events/750-alma-achieves-new-observing-capabilities-high-frequency-vision-shows-uranus-in-new-light. This marks another step toward to completion of full capabilities at ALMA.
